He Lives

Yeah, well barely. I'm organising a big street art show opening at the end of the month, and it's taking all of my time and more. Come along, it's gonna be awesome. Just email names to rsvp@prescriptionart.com for the opening night... which is on October 30th.

I made a trip to Paris last week & picked up this bad boy amongst many others....

I've also had to squeeze in a trip to Ibiza since my last post. Tough gig eh! Well it was my first trip & i've got to say I had a pretty damn good time. Against my expectations, Wonderland featuring Pete Tong & Groove Armada was particularly excellent fun (as well as being the loudest place I have ever been in my life). Space on the Sunday seemed a little moody, but DJ Hell played an incredible set. I spent a lot of time listening to his Italo 'Hellboy' mix in preparation - and I can't recommend it enough. It's up there with I-F's 'Mixed up in the Hague'. Here's a gem from that album, originally released in 1983.

MR FLAGIO - TAKE A CHANCE

The main room DJs in Ibiza, like everywhere else, seem trapped in playing some really dismal form of house music that is really starting to get on my nerves. Is there anything so wrong with a tune? Or a hook? Or anything other than a fucking tedious relentless beat. Maybe i'm just getting old, but I really don't understand these records.... but seem condemned to listening to them everytime I go to a club these days. Make it stop!! Despite my reservations about seeing Groove Armada, the previous evening, they played a great DJ set by virtue of playing a lot of very good records. It's not that hard!

Without a doubt the tune of Ibiza this summer seemed to be this remake of Laurent Garnier's 'Man With The Red Face' by Mark Knight and Funkagenda. Yes it's just a housed up version of the original, but I can't deny that this has power... and despite being rather commercial and despite hearing it 5 times a day, it shone brightly amongst everything else played by these big name DJs. Expect this to be heading for the charts.

MARK KNIGHT & FUNKAGENDA - MAN WITH THE RED FACE

In Flagranti are hot as ever right now, and i'm loving their new remix of Golden Bug on Gomma. A filthy disco groove with a German fella shouting 'Into a Rhythm' over the top.. particularly arthythmically. And also ironically butting in with 'More music, less talk'. Anyway, it works. Hard.

GOLDEN BUG - LOOKLOOKLOOK (IN FLAGRANTI REMIX)

EDIT: Removed by Request

As well as this, and their new single on Kitsune, i'm loving this re-edit from last year on the amazing Mindless Boogie label.... mixing up 'Emotional Rescue' and 'She's a Rainbow' by the Stones in brilliant fashion.

IN FLAGRANTI - EMOTIONAL R

A bit more ravey is this new remix from Apocalypso's Dekker & Johan. It has all the ingredients of the fidgety type house music that's started to grate a little of late, but seems to carry it off much more subtly and without resorting to bashing you over the head.

THE HOURS - CAN YOU SEE THE LIGHT (DEKKER & JOHAN DUB)

There are a thousand other things I shouldwrite about, but lastly for now is the new album from El Guincho - which has been getting heavy play at Headphonesex HQ. Essentially a solo album by Catalunian Pablo Diaz-Reixa,
it sounds as if it comes from everywhere and nowhere. A psychedelic carnival of afrobeat, hip-hop, reggae, indie, and probably every other genre of music you could name. It sounds original & experimental, but doesn't ever forget the importance of a good tune. Good stuff indeed...
