Breakin'

I happened to listen to this on the way to work this morning, and since i've been banging on about Banksy I thought you may find it interesting.... for it's a 1982 track by graffiti legend Futura 2000.

I only knew Futura as the house designer for Mo Wax, responsible amongst many other things for the distinctive look of the Unkle releases.... but according to this track he's been doing graf since 1972! Admittedly the track itself is pretty rough. Futura's 'flow' is, well, shit, and the best part of the track is probably the spray can sounds at the start! However the lyrics are quite interesting, and the backing is done by THE CLASH!! According to discogs he returned the favour by appearing on 'Overpowered by Funk' from The Clash's 'Combat Rock'. I don't have that album though, so can't comment any further!

FUTURA 2000 - THE ESCAPADES OF FUTURA 2000 (THE ESCAPADES RAP)

I got this from a 1998 CD of old skool electro compiled by The Micronauts, entitled 'Why is it Fresh? The Celluloid Years'.

I also enjoyed this track by 'Time Zone', which seems to span the boundaries of Electro, Disco (check the Chic samples) and Disco (Not Disco). Turns out it's by Afrika Bamabaata.

TIME ZONE - THE WILDSTYLE (INSTRUMENTAL MIX)

It's quite interesting listening to both of these (and indeed most of the album) what a limited selection of samples the producers used. You'd think that 4 years on from 'Rappers Delight' they would have been a bit tired of hearing 'Good Times' and saying 'You Don't Stop'!
